The wholesome food you eat has an ominous twin: the toxic food you shouldn’t eat — and there’s a lot of it. In 2019, for example, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recalled over 10,000 tons of food products that were potentially dangerous to consumers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the USDA together issued 337 food recalls in 2019, and that number has been edging up every year.
In 2006, more than 205 people in 26 states got sick and five people died from eating contaminated spinach. And according to the Baltimore Sun, the CDC estimated in 2011 that 3,000 Americans die annually from foodborne diseases and another 128,000 are hospitalized.
